Doña Juanita Figueroa is first generation Boricua nacida y criada en Guayama Puerto Rico barrio Borinquen. In 1954, at 19 years old her family hardship brought her to Chicago, Harrison and Ashland to be exact. Doña Juanita today is considered a pilar of what is four generations of Puerto Rican family in the diáspora. As a provider one thing that was consistent was cooking for her love ones, and pasteles were a must. One of my first vivid memories with Doña Juanita is spending time in the kitchen making pasteles. Together Wolstri and Urban Pilón will bring culture, urban contemporary art, & the Boricua culinary arts together. Project Doña Juanita’s Pasteles was born solely to benefit families with food insecurities on the island.
